Award Description
The Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching demonstrates the value LUMS attributes to the core function of teaching and learning. Each Award recognizes the contributions of an individual who, through innovation, commitment, and continued excellence in teaching have significantly enhanced the quality of their students’ learning experiences.
The Award recognises sustained achievement with weight given to evidence of continuing effort and outstanding contributions in teaching and learning over several years. Outstanding contributions capture the intellectual growth of students and enhanced student learning that results from innovative teaching in the classroom, the mentorship of students through involvement in research or practical experience, the development of novel and effective educational materials, and leadership that promotes teaching and learning at LUMS.
Up to five Awards may be given each year.
Eligibility
All full-time and part-time instructors (faculty, adjuncts, teaching fellows, professors of practice) who contribute to teaching and learning at LUMS are eligible. Senior administrators (i.e., Chairs, Associate Deans, Deans) are not eligible to apply for the award while they hold their positions but are encouraged to support and nominate outstanding instructors for the Award.
Recipients of the Award

Will be presented a citation of excellence and memento at the Spring convocation

May choose to receive PKR 750,000 for a collaborative teaching and learning project OR individual grants in the amount of PKR 100,000 for a teaching and learning project/professional development

Will receive an invitation to the Vice Chancellor’s Cohort Day and Retreat

Have the opportunity for one representative from the cohort to speak at convocation

Are eligible to join the Learning Institute as a member of the LUMS Teaching Academy
Submission Deadlines
- Nomination questionnaire completed by the nominator by 4:00 pm on February 08, 2022 and can be accessed here
- Nominators submit nomination portfolios by 4:00 pm on April 15, 2022, directly to lli@lums.edu.pk
Nomination Process
Step 1 |
A nominator must complete a short nomination questionnaire by 4:00 pm on February 08, 2022, indicating their intent to support a nominee to attest to the quality and impact of their teaching on student learning. |
Step 2 |
A nomination letter written by the nominator. The nominator can be a Chair, Dean, faculty, staff or student who attests to the nominee’s excellence and effectiveness in teaching, as well as the impact the nominee has had on student learning. Nominators should discuss the nominee’s innovative teaching, mentoring, development of innovative teaching materials, and highlight compelling evidence demonstrating sustained impact on and enhancement of the student learning experience. Nominators should be aware that the Award is not intended to celebrate impressive accomplishments more broadly, but to celebrate innovative teaching processes and impacts demonstrated by an instructor. (One page maximum) |
Step 3 |
A statement of teaching philosophy that effectively narrates the nominee’s beliefs about learning, approaches to enhancing learning, and particular effective teaching strategies and ways in which pedagogy is used within their discipline. (One page maximum) |
Step 4 |
Evidence should substantiate claims made in the teaching philosophy statement. It may be presented in the form of descriptions of innovative teaching, mentoring, the development of educational materials. Strong descriptions should include student learning outcomes that are aligned with effective assessments. (Five page maximum). |
Step 5 |
Letters of support from a variety of colleagues and students (e.g., former students, colleagues/faculty at institutional, national, international levels) that attest to the nominee’s impact and effectiveness in teaching and learning. The letters should not be solicited by the nominee. The nominator or the Learning Institute can help to solicit letters. Please do not ask for letters from students who are currently enrolled in the instructor’s courses. (Three letters required; three pages maximum) |
